Welcome to The Hidden China

Hi, I’m Futing—a traveler who loves exploring (and helping others explore) China through authentic experiences.

WWhy “The Hidden China”?

Much of what people think they know about China comes from news coverage, social media clips, or movies. These sources often focus on major events or extremes, which can be useful, but they rarely show what everyday life and travel here actually feel like.

As a result, many travelers arrive with expectations that don’t quite match what they experience once they’re here. I’ve created The Hidden China to help bridge that gap by sharing a more complete, experience-based view of the country. This site focuses on practical details, cultural context, and ordinary moments that will make your trip to China more meaningful.

What you’ll find here

  • City travel made easier: transportation, navigation, and how to get around smoothly.
  • Tips for safety & comfort: common concerns, real-world experiences, and what to prepare for.
  • Local culture explained: etiquette, communication, and what may feel different from home.
  • Hidden places & authentic experiences: neighborhoods, food, nature, and everyday street life.

In recent years, China has expanded visa-free and transit visa-free options for more countries. And more international travelers have begun sharing their experiences on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Many visitors say that once they arrive, they’re surprised by how safe, modern, and clean cities feel, and how smooth travel can be. If you’re planning a trip, watching travel videos (or reading this blog!) can be a great way to build confidence before you come.

Helping make travel in China easier

One of the main goals of this site is to make your trip to China more comfortable and less stressful, especially if it’s your first time.

China is a fascinating place to travel. You’ll experience a culture shaped by thousands of years of history, diverse landscapes, unforgettable food, and fast-changing modern cities. But what often leaves the strongest impression on visitors is the people: many travelers find locals to be kind, friendly, and welcoming.

If you’re traveling as a family, especially with children, China can also be surprisingly easy. From transportation to dining to accommodations, there are many options that work well for families.

The biggest challenges for many visitors are the everyday logistics, such as:

  • Internet & apps: some apps you use at home may not work the same way in China.
  • Payments: cash is used less and less, while mobile payments are common.
  • Language & communication: signs, menus, and interactions can feel intimidating.

The good news is that most of these challenges can be handled with a few simple steps. On this website, I share practical, step-by-step guidance, including:

  • What to prepare before you arrive (internet access, payments, and the apps you’ll need).
  • City-by-city travel guides with routes, transportation tips, family-friendly advice, and things to watch out for.
  • Good-value hotels I’ve personally stayed in, with pros and cons.
  • Local food people love, plus small spots to check out.

If there’s a city I haven’t visited yet, I use my language advantage to research on Chinese platforms, filter out unreliable information, and turn it into clear guides for international travelers.

My goal is to build this site into a travel resource for anyone curious about Chinese culture, and for anyone planning a trip to China. Families are especially welcome here, and I pay close attention to helpful details for traveling with kids.

If you have questions about traveling in China, especially traveling with children, feel free to leave a comment or reach out through the Contact page. I do my best to read every message and offer advice that’s honest and helpful.

I hope you find a China here that feels more real—and a little more welcoming, too!
