Where to Stay in Guangzhou for tourist? – Best Areas & Hotels

Guangzhou is one of China’s biggest and most historical cities. It has over 2,200 years of history, but has now become modern and fast-paced.

In a city this big, knowing where to stay as a tourist helps you save time, make sightseeing more convenient, and ensure that you have the most enjoyable trip possible. I’ve put together this guide to help you choose the right neighborhood and hotel for your trip to Guangzhou.

I’ve evaluated places to stay in Guangzhou based on three criteria: how easy it is to get around, how convenient the location is in relation to popular landmarks, and the value for the price. After considering these things, I’ve selected three areas that I would most recommend to travelers, each of which I will describe here and suggest a few hotels within.

My Perspective

I’m Chinese and lived in Guangzhou for about ten years. Since moving away, I’ve been back many times with my kids, so this guide is based on my own experiences.

I’m also a shareholder in Guangzhou Huacheng Center Hotel in Tianhe. It’s in one of the city’s busiest business and shopping areas, around 20 meters from Linhexi Metro Station.

As such, I understand the hotels in the area well, which gives me a more informed perspective on where travelers should stay.

If you’re curious about Guangzhou Huacheng Center Hotel, you can find it on Trip.com. And if you decide to stay there, reach out to me and I can offer 15% off the listed Trip.com rate, or, if you book directly on Trip.com, I can arrange complimentary breakfast.

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing Where to Stay

As I said, Guangzhou is a big city, so the area you choose to stay in will impact your experience. The best choice will be close to the metro, have convenient access to the sites in your itinerary, and be in a neighborhood that fits your style and needs.

As you start planning your trip, these are the three areas that I recommend looking for hotels in:

1. Tianhe District — modern and easiest for most travelers

If you want a modern area of the city and views of the skyline, stay near Zhujiang New Town Metro Station within Tianhe District.

Or, if shopping and overall convenience matter more to you, stay near Tiyu Xilu, Shipaiqiao, or Linhexi Metro Station.

2. Yuexiu District — walkable, charming, and historic

If you want shopping and a lively central location, stay near Beijing Road Metro Station in Yuexiu District.

If you’d rather stay somewhere more local, stay near Gongyuanqian Metro Station.

These two parts of Yuexiu are also close to each other (only about a 15-minute walk apart) so it’s easy to go between them if you want to experience both.

3. Liwan District — Xiguan and Cantonese culture, great food, and good value

In Liwan District, I’d recommend staying near Huangsha Metro Station. It gives you easy access to the main sites and some of the city’s busiest shopping areas, so you can see a bit of everything

Why stay near a metro station?

Being close to the metro is by far the most convenient way to explore all of Guangzhou, especially when you’re starting your day early in the morning or coming back later at night. The city’s metro is clean, reliable, and connected to most of the popular tourist spots.

If possible, I’d stay near a station that’s close to the main sites or a busy shopping area. Guangzhou is busy well into the night, sometimes until 2:00 a.m., so if you want to experience the city’s nightlife, this gives you the most flexibility for evening walks or meals.

The other reason to be close to a metro station is cost. The fares are based on distance, but regardless of where you go in the city, the metro is overall very affordable. If you expect to use it a lot during your trip, you can purchase a metro pass for unlimited rides. The main options are a one-day pass for 20 RMB or a three-day pass for 50 RMB.

All this being said, if you do end up choosing a hotel that’s farther from the metro, ride-hailing in Guangzhou is generally easy and affordable, especially if you’re traveling with others.

The only downside to ordering a ride is that it can be slower and more expensive during rush hour.

Hotel prices in Guangzhou

Hotel prices vary quite a bit depending on the area. On a normal weekday, the more upscale hotels in this guide are usually over $200 a night, while the more budget-friendly options are around $100 a night. My hotel, Guangzhou Huacheng Center Hotel, is in that range as well.

There are certainly cheaper options, but there are usually some trade-offs. Also, a nice hotel doesn’t necessarily guarantee a convenient location, and vice versa.

Personally, I think a budget of around $80 or more a night gives you the best options for a comfortable stay.

Also, keep in mind that prices do go up during peak season, and especially during major holidays such as Labor Day, National Day, and Chinese New Year. Popular areas are more likely to sell out, so if you’ll be traveling during these periods, be sure to book as early as you can.

Which booking platform should you use?

Many international travelers are familiar with platforms like Booking.com, but in China, I’d recommend trying Trip first. It’s the biggest travel booking platform in China, so it often has lower prices and more options.

And in addition to hotels, you can use it to book flights, train tickets, attractions, and other travel services.

Because Trip is so widely used in China, many hotels also partner with Trip and offer lower rates there than on other platforms. Some higher-end hotels even sign exclusive deals with Trip, and can’t be booked through other sites. In return, this helps them get more exposure and bookings from the platform. My own hotel is one example of this.

Once you’ve found a hotel, it’s still worth checking on other platforms like Booking.com to make sure that you’re getting the best rate.

Bring your passport for check-in

Hotels in China will need your passport for check-in and registration, so be sure to have it with you.

Details About Where to Stay in Guangzhou

Tianhe District: Modern, Well-Connected, and Easiest for Most Visitors

Best for: First-time visitors to Guangzhou, families, business travelers, and anyone who wants easy transportation options.

Why stay in Tianhe?

  • It’s one of Guangzhou’s main business and commercial districts, meaning it’s modern and more tailored to international visitors.
  • It’s very well-connected by metro, so getting around the city is easy. Metro Line 3 gives you a direct link to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
  • There are a variety of places to eat, shop, and rest, so you don’t have to leave the area to find things to do.

With shopping, restaurants, hotels, and major transport all close together, Tianhe is the most practical area to stay in for many travelers. Whether you want to explore the old city or spend a day at Chimelong with kids, Tianhe is a great starting point for exploring Guangzhou.

Tianhe is also more diverse, so there’s more variety when it comes to food. Beyond Cantonese food, you’ll also find food from across China, along with plenty of Western and Southeast Asian options. If you’re staying for a number of days, this gives you more variety from meal to meal.

One of Tianhe’s biggest advantages is how easy it is to get around. The District has excellent metro coverage, with easy links to many of Guangzhou’s main sites, the airport, and major rail stations. If you’re flying into Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, you can get right to Tianhe on Metro Line 3.

Accommodations in Tianhe are mostly mid-range to upscale, though you’ll also find serviced apartments and business hotels for shorter stays. Compared with the other two areas that I recommend, Yuexiu and Liwan, comparable hotels in Tianhe are often a little more expensive.

1. Near Zhujiang New Town Station

Zhujiang New Town sits in the heart of Guangzhou’s central business district, so it’s a good choice if you want to experience the modern city but still have access to museums and popular sites.

Canton Tower

It’s right by Huacheng Square and has good views of Canton Tower, making it one of the best areas to stay if you want to see the city’s skyline. The area is full of upscale malls and office buildings, but cultural highlights such as the Guangdong Museum and Guangzhou Library are also close by.

2. Near Tiyu Xilu, Shipaiqiao, or Linhexi Station

This part of Tianhe sits in the middle of the District’s main shopping and business area. Major malls such as Taikoo Hui, Tee Mall, Grandview Mall, and Parc Central are all close together here. You’ll find everything from luxury brands to affordable chain stores, so it’s a good place to shop, eat, or take a break between sightseeing stops.

Parc Central

This area is also good for travelers with kids. Grandview Mall is especially popular for families, with family-friendly attractions, areas just for kids, and a variety of places to eat and rest.

If you’re planning a trip to Chimelong, Metro Line 3 gets you to Hanxi Changlong Station in about 20 to 30 minutes. It’s also close to Guangzhou East Railway Station. If you’re also heading to Shenzhen, Hong Kong, or elsewhere in the region, staying here makes onward travel much easier.

Yuexiu District: Walkable, Historic, and Full of Old Guangzhou Character

Best for: Travelers on a tighter budget, visitors focused mainly on sightseeing, people who like to explore on foot, and solo travelers.

Why stay in Yuexiu District?

  • Many of Guangzhou’s top historical and cultural sights are in this area.
  • Beijing Road is a great place to shop and walk around.
  • Hotels here usually offer better value than those in Tianhe.
  • It’s one of the best areas for traditional Cantonese food.
  • This area is well connected by metro, so getting to other parts of the city is easy.

Located in central Guangzhou, Yuexiu is one of the city’s oldest and most historic districts, so this is a great area to stay in if you’re interested in the city’s history and Lingnan culture. It’s also one of the best choices if you like exploring a city on foot when you travel.

This part of the city still has many qilou-style arcades, long-standing local businesses, and older streets, which gives you a more authentic experience. Attractions such as Yuexiu Park, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Dafo Temple, the Museum of the Nanyue King, and People’s Park are all easy to combine in one day.

It’s also easy to get around from here. Several metro lines pass through the District, and the bus network is extensive as well. Getting to the Pearl River area or to districts such as Tianhe and Liwan is straightforward from Yuexiu.

In terms of food, Yuexiu is more traditional. There are numerous Cantonese restaurants and traditional tea houses here, so it’s a good place to try classics such as yum cha, rice noodle rolls, and roast goose.

For shopping, Yuexiu can’t compete with Tianhe in terms of large upscale malls, but the shopping experience feels more authentic.

Beijing Road Pedestrian Street is the best example. You’ll find malls, department stores, and chain brands there, but also smaller street shops selling local snacks, souvenirs, and essentials.

Beijing Road also preserves sections of Guangzhou’s ancient road from the Tang and Song dynasties, so this is one of the few places in the city where shopping and city history sit side by side.

Accommodation in Yuexiu is usually more affordable than in Tianhe for the same standard of hotel. If you want to keep costs down without giving up convenient transportation and an authentic experience, Yuexiu is one of the best-value areas to stay in.

1. Near Beijing Road Station

This area is close to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, with many restaurants, shops, and sites within walking distance. For first-time visitors who want somewhere energetic that’s convenient for sightseeing, this is a good choice.

2. Near Gongyuanqian Station

This is one of the main metro hubs in Guangzhou’s old city, so changing lines is easy. Even so, the area around the station still feels very local, with many places nearby to see everyday life, such as People’s Park.

Liwan District: Better Value, Great Food, and More Old Guangzhou Character

Best for: Travelers on a smaller budget, those interested in culture, food lovers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys exploring on foot.

Why stay in Liwan District?

  • The District is well connected by metro, so getting to other parts of the city is easy.
  • Shamian Island is great for a walk and for photography.
  • The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is one of the best places to see Lingnan architecture and ancestral hall culture.
  • Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and Yongqing Fang are good places to shop, explore, and take photos.
  • The area has a variety of traditional snacks and eateries, and it feels very local.

Liwan and Yuexiu are both part of Guangzhou’s old city, but Yuexiu is better known for major historical sites, while Liwan displays Xiguan culture and the atmosphere of old Guangzhou.

The District still has old streets, historic buildings, and neighborhood life, which makes it a good choice if you want to experience authentic Guangzhou. It’s also usually cheaper overall, so it works well for travelers trying to keep costs down.

It includes well-known areas to walk around, such as Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and Yongqing Fang, which show how Guangzhou’s older neighborhoods have been adapted for modern shopping and tourism. There are many old shops in this area that sell local snacks, tea, handicrafts, and other Guangzhou specialties.

There are also historic spaces like Shamian Island, a quiet area that shows Guangzhou’s past through its preservation of many late 19th-century European-style buildings. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is also one of Liwan’s most famous cultural sites, conveying the culture of ancestral halls and the beauty of Lingnan craftsmanship. It now houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, which is worth visiting if you’re interested in traditional decorative arts.

Like Yuexiu, Liwan is one of the best parts of the old city for food. You’ll find affordable street snacks and established local places that the city’s residents enjoy. Overall, the food here leans more traditional.

It’s also fairly easy to get around the city from Liwan. Metro Lines 1, 6, and 8, along with the Guangfo Line, run through different parts of the District, so getting to other major parts of Guangzhou is simple. If you stay near Huangsha Station, it’s easy to reach areas such as Zhujiang New Town (around 30 minutes) and Beijing Road (around 20 minutes) by metro.

Accommodations in Liwan are usually cheaper overall than in both Yuexiu and Tianhe, which makes it a good choice for backpackers, student travelers, and anyone who’d rather spend more of their budget on food and experiences. There are many budget hotels, family-run guesthouses, and hostels in the area.

Best Area to Stay

Near Huangsha Station

Huangsha is a practical choice within the Liwan District as it’s easy to get around from and there are a variety of food and shopping choices.

Shamian Island is a short walk away, Yongqing Fang is also walkable, and Link Plaza Liwan sits directly above Huangsha Station.

Where to Stay if You’re Visiting Chimelong

Many families visiting Guangzhou also plan a trip to Chimelong Tourist Resort. Chimelong is in Panyu District, so it’s some distance from central Guangzhou. Even so, it’s still easy to get to by metro, especially via Hanxi Changlong Station on Metro Line 3.

If Chimelong isn’t the only reason for your trip, and you don’t plan to stay at one of the resort’s higher-priced hotels, Tianhe is still the most practical choice—especially around Zhujiang New Town, Tiyu Xilu, or Linhexi.

From these parts of Tianhe, the metro ride to Hanxi Changlong usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. This allows you to get to Chimelong easily but still visit places like Canton Tower, Beijing Road, and a Pearl River night cruise in Guangzhou.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most visitors, Tianhe is the most practical area to stay in, especially near stations such as Zhujiang New Town, Tiyu Xilu, and Linhexi. It’s simple to get around from here, the airport and main sites are easy to reach, and there’s a wider variety of food, shopping, and hotels.

If you’re more interested in food, history, and Guangzhou culture, Yuexiu or Liwan would be a better choice.

Guangzhou is a safe city for visitors, whether you’re traveling solo or with family. As in any big city, you should still keep an eye on your belongings and avoid isolated areas late at night.

If you’re primarily visiting Guangzhou’s main city sites, 2 to 3 days is usually enough. If you’re also planning to visit Chimelong, I suggest adding another day or 2.

Guangzhou also fits easily into a broader trip around South China. For example, you could pair it with a day trip to Foshan, or combine it with Shenzhen and Hong Kong on the same trip. You can reach Shenzhen from Guangzhou in about 40 minutes, while the direct high-speed train from Guangzhou East to Hong Kong West Kowloon is typically around an hour.

Guangzhou East Railway Station is generally the best place to stay if you want to be near a major rail hub. Because it’s in Tianhe, you get better metro access, more nearby shopping and hotels, and easier onward rail travel.
